Osteochondrosis (OC) is a developmental disorder in which a problem occurs in the normal growth of cartilage and subchondral bone. This can in turn lead to joint problems. It is a developmental disorder and therefore mainly affects young horses. When fragments of the cartilage also come loose during this ossification process, we speak of osteochondrosis dissecans (OCD). The joints most often affected by this condition are the stifle joint, the hock joint and the fetlocks.

🔍 Cause
Osteochondrosis has a multifactorial cause. Genetic, nutritional and biomechanical factors play an important role in this. Because the condition is partly hereditary, it is not advisable to use breeding lines or stallions that increase the chance of osteochondrosis developing.
In addition to the genetic predisposition, various environmental factors can contribute to the development of the condition. Incorrect, over-rich feeding and insufficient exercise are, after all, also important risk factors for developing OCD.
⚖️ Feeding and exercise
OCD occurs more often in fast-growing animals, which experience a greater load on the ossification process. An energy-rich diet with high amounts of carbohydrates can lead to a disruption of the cellular processes that are essential for normal bone formation.
It is therefore important to offer your horse a balanced diet with sufficient minerals in order to limit growth spurts and prevent unnecessary strain on the ossification process. If you are in doubt about the right diet for your growing horse, feel free to contact us for feeding advice.
Exercise is also essential for the development of strong bones and joints. Horses that do not have access to a pasture or experience insufficient joint loading run a greater risk of developing osteochondrosis. Exercise ensures better nutrition and functional adaptation of the cartilage, bones and tendons. It is therefore important to give your growing horse sufficient exercise.
📸 Symptoms and early detection
In many cases OC gives no clear symptoms. Sometimes you notice:
a slight swelling of the joint
stiffness or lameness, especially after rest
Early detection helps to prevent later problems.
👉 Radiographic screening consists on average of 18 to 22 X-rays.
OCD fragments in the stifle can already be visible from 6 months,
but many reattach or heal spontaneously during growth.
That is why a complete screening is recommended at around 18 months, when the skeleton has largely finished growing and only permanent abnormalities remain visible.

🏥 Treatment
When osteochondrosis dissecans (OCD) is established, loose fragments can be removed surgically. This is done mainly in young horses with a view to a sporting career or sale. In older horses in which OC or OCD is established at a later age, with or without clinical symptoms, alternative therapies may be applicable.
In summary
Osteochondrosis is a condition that can occur in growing horses and for which timely diagnosis is important in order to prevent future problems. With the right management we can considerably reduce the chance of OCD, even in genetically predisposed horses.
