Verkeerde beenstand of foutieve bekapping
Gebruik graasmaskers of korte weideperiodes

Laminitis (founder) is a serious and painful condition of the hooves in horses and ponies. In it, the laminae – the tissue that attaches the pedal bone to the hoof wall – become inflamed or damaged.
When this tissue loses its firmness, the pedal bone can rotate or even sink through the sole. This causes severe pain and can lead to permanent lameness or euthanasia. 👉 Laminitis is therefore always a medical emergency.
🔍 What happens during laminitis?
The laminae act as a kind of “suspension system” that holds the pedal bone in place. If that system fails, the pedal bone sinks or rotates, causing the hoof to lose its structure.
The condition can proceed in four phases:
Phase
Symptoms
Developmental phase
8 to 60 hours after the first trigger. There is no visible lameness yet, but physiological damage to the laminae is beginning
Acute phase
onset of (visible) symptoms, usually 24–72 hours after the start of laminitis
Subacute phase
mild to moderate symptoms. Often a transitional phase towards recovery or chronic laminitis.
Chronic phase
When the laminitis lasts longer than 72 hours and/or there is permanent mechanical damage (such as rotation or sinking of the pedal bone). This can lead to permanent changes in the hoof structure.
🔬 Causes
Laminitis can have various causes. The most important risk factors are:
Hormonal conditions
Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS): insulin resistance disrupts the blood circulation in the hoof
PPID (Cushing’s): especially in older horses, increases susceptibility to laminitis.
Feeding
Too much sugar and starch (young grass, grains, concentrate feed) can cause inflammation
Sudden feed changes increase the risk.
Mechanical overload
When one leg has to bear too much weight for a long time, for example after an injury or fracture.
Incorrect limb conformation or faulty trimming
This can cause the laminae to become overloaded. This continuous pressure causes reduced blood flow and inflammation in the hoof, with laminitis as a result. That is why good hoof balance and regular hoof care are essential, certainly in horses with sensitive hooves or abnormal limb conformation.
Infections and inflammation
Severe infections (such as colic, uterine infection or sepsis) can cause damage in the hoof via inflammatory substances.
🩺 Symptoms
The first signs are often subtle: restlessness, moving less or lying down more often.
In the acute phase the complaints become clearer:
Severe lameness, especially when turning or walking on hard ground.
Warm hooves with a palpable, pounding pulse at the fetlock.
Typical “laminitic stance”: the horse leans backwards to relieve the front hooves.
In the chronic phase, permanent changes arise:
Long toes, flat soles, growth rings and deformed horn growth.
On X-rays, rotation or sinking of the pedal bone is often visible.
Sometimes abscesses or cracks occur in the hoof wall.
⚠️ Diagnosis & treatment
A correct diagnosis begins with a thorough clinical examination. The vet assesses the position and temperature of the hooves, feels the pulse at the fetlock and checks for pain reactions. In addition, radiographs are taken to see whether there is rotation or sinking of the pedal bone. Via blood tests, underlying conditions such as Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS) or PPID (Cushing’s) can be detected, since these strongly increase the risk of laminitis.
The treatment is always a combination of pain relief, treatment of the underlying cause and support of the hooves.
Important elements are:
Rest on a soft surface, to prevent further damage.
Pain relief and anti-inflammatories to keep the horse comfortable.
Depending on the cause: cooling of the hooves (e.g. with iced water or cold packs for 48 hours) to limit the inflammation.
Correction of the hoof balance with hoof support if necessary, for example with foam pads, casts or adapted shoeing, in collaboration with an experienced farrier.
Regular checks (with X-rays) to follow up the recovery and make timely adjustments.
Adapted feeding, both for stabilisation and prevention. Laminitis does not have to mean that your horse can never go back out to pasture, but a tailored plan and consultation with your vet are required.
A quick diagnosis, intensive care and close collaboration between vet and farrier give the best chance of full recovery and a good quality of life in the long term.
🌿 Prevention
Feeding and pasture management
Draw up a grazing plan with your vet (adapted to your possibilities and the needs of your horse/pony): when, how much, how
Use grazing muzzles or short grazing periods
Choose the right “concentrate feed”; every horse needs an extra source of vitamins and minerals, including horses with laminitis. However, not every feed is suitable and many companies use misleading names such as “healthy”, “sugar-free”, etc. An analysis of the ingredients is essential!
Is your horse sensitive? Support him with the right medication/herbs at sensitive moments/transitions. Ask your vet for advice on this!
Weight control
Keep your horse at a healthy body weight.
Regular exercise helps to improve the metabolism.
Regular hoof care
Every 6–8 weeks, with attention to sole thickness, toe length and balance.
Medical screening
Have at-risk horses (>15 years or overweight) tested for EMS and PPID (Cushing’s) if you notice symptoms.
Early treatment considerably improves the prognosis
In summary
Laminitis is not an ordinary lameness, but a serious condition that always requires immediate medical help. The sooner you contact a vet, the greater the chance of full recovery.
